Welcome!

Thank you for joining me in my adventures.  

As many of you already know, I have recently changed my life!  My Albuquerque house is in escrow, I've resigned from my job, and I've packed my remaining possessions into a cargo trailer that I'm storing in South Dakota.

My plan for this next year is to help in the mission field however and wherever I can.  I have a passion for working with my hands and I want to use that God-given talent wherever He leads me to serve.

The first part of my plan is to go to Cuba with Mexico Missions & Beyond (www.mexicomissionsadventista.org) to assist in an evangelistic campaign and some construction work.  In December, during a visit to Belize regarding mission work (movecamp.mosesinternational.org), I learned about Mexico Missions & Beyond from previous volunteers. When I heard their stories and about the upcoming trip to Cuba, I felt called to serve with them.  It was very exciting! 

My flight to Holguin, Cuba leaves from Miami on Monday, February 27. I will return mid March to visit family and friends in the Seattle area. From there, I fly to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to volunteer with Adventist Health International (ahiglobal.org) at the Haiti Adventist Hospital.  I expect to work in maintenance and construction-related projects.  A friend at church in Albuquerque introduced me to a couple who previously served at the Haiti Adventist Hospital.  Through our discussions, I became aware of the need for volunteer workers and was directed to the physician who facilitated my service.  His enthusiasm was contagious, and I quickly felt this was the right fit for me. 

At this time, I am anticipating that Haiti will be my "home base" through 2023. 

In May I will be taking a short break to join the Weimar University Orchestra Mission Tour (give.weimar.org/projects/weimar-orchestra-mission-tour-2023) for travel to South Korea and Japan.  I will be representing my Great-Great-Great Grandfather, William Grainger, who was the first Adventist Missionary to Japan in 1896.  It will be exciting to meet the Great-Great-Great Grandson of the man who invited William Grainger to serve in Japan and I hope to help rekindle the missionary spirit in the lives of the young people and church members in Japan and South Korea.

This is the current plan, but I will continue to adapt as God leads!

As you can imagine, I'm not sure how reliable my internet access will be during my travels.  As much as I'd like to be able have personal contact with each of you, I will mainly rely on this blog. I will provide monthly updates to my aunt who will facilitate this blog on my behalf. She will also pass on any comments left below and I will provide her with answers to any questions you may have.

 God used Will's time in Nevada during August for an unexpected detour.  While roughing it in the desert, he had an unfortunate collision with a rock that tore out the undercarriage of his truck and stopped him in his tracks.  He had to rely on civilization and the goodness and generosity of mechanics to get him to Sacramento where he left his truck at the Ford dealership for repairs.  He took Amtrak (on his bucket list!) to Denver where he rented a car and drove the rest of the way to his home base in South Dakota.  Once he returned he toured around North Dakota and was able to spend a day on an active farm getting toured and checked out on some big equipment.  He really enjoyed his time there and soaked up the beauty of the plains! Very different from where he's been this year. And... He's back!

 Will completed his time in Haiti when he left there on Sunday, July 30. Prior to leaving he was able to accomplish a whole lot!!  What seemed to be overwhelming and next to impossible to achieve in April was completed in full before his departure.   The entire oxygen system for the new hospital wing is installed and working. He says, "It feels miraculous that we finally got there! All the random connectors and all the problems felt overwhelming back in April. But it is all working now with no leaks!  "This wall got very busy. Many pipes, tubes, conduits, wires, etc. But it all works! "This is the completed hallway.   If you look closely on the above photo you can see a light by each door which is a  nurse call light (new feature.)  There are also hallway lights installed."    This is one of the new bathrooms. From Haiti to Japan

 This post is going to cover a lot of info! So hang on for the ride!! After getting a much-needed haircut by a Haitian barber, Will went by ambulance on Sunday, May 14, to Port-au-Prince airport from his place on the hospital compound.  Doesn't that sound dramatic?! But this was the mode of transportation available and it enabled him to pass through sketchy areas and arrive safely at his destination.  In need of a good buzz... His view from the ambulance. After safe arrival in Port-au-Prince, Will flew to Miami (BACK IN THE USA!!) then Atlanta, and finally arrived in Sacramento in the early morning hours of Monday, May 15. It was over 12 hours of travel! He had a brief respite in Weimar, CA, before their departure at 4am to San Jose, CA, where the orchestra group met and flew out to Tokyo.
